Sometimes when you paint a specific story at a specific moment in time, you make something feel universal, or at least that is my goal. I either take my own photos or mine my friends’ photos for one that leaps out at me, telling me to paint it. Usually, the narrative emerges as I paint, even though I have an overall idea at the beginning of the piece. The inspiration may be an evocative gesture or emotion as in Eliza (a friend’s daughter who has autism) or Myriam (who displays the sheer joy of a day at the beach) or it can be more about light and color and composition as in Morning Light in Hardwick (from a photo that I took), and hopefully a story reveals itself as I develop my work.
